The Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.

1 THESSALONIANS 4:16-17

THE TIMING OF the return of Jesus for his church is sometimes a controversial issue in Christian circles today. What is that timing? How will it affect us?

There are many different answers. But if you deal with simply the words of this passage, you will find some rather direct statements about what will happen. First, Jesus will come out of heaven with a shout that the whole world will hear. Second, Christians who have died will be raised up alive. This presumably includes every believer from every age, even those who lived before Jesus was born, although Paul does not say that here.

Third, if we’re still alive at this time, we also will be pulled up into the clouds to meet Jesus in the air. From that moment on, we will be with Jesus forever, see his face, and know him in a way we never did in this world.

This is often called the “blessed hope” of the church. While some of the details about it are not clear, the great promise to all of us is that Jesus will rescue us from sin and eternal death and make a new world for us to live in. In our lives today, just as in the end times, Jesus has the last word, the “commanding shout” that may sound faint to us at times but is nonetheless real and decisive. He is still in control.
